Denizens was composed by Los Angeles composer Steven James Williams in 2013. It is in three distinct, but contiguous, movements, intended to be performed without separation. Each of the three contrasting movements features a different member of the ensemble and explores different aspects of musical language and tuba technique. I. Dramatic; II. Lyric; III. Driving. It was commissioned by and is dedicated to tubist/composer Jim Self. Written for and premiered by the University of Southern California Tuba faculty. The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Norm Pearson was featured in the 1st movement, Los Angeles studio fixture Doug Tornquist in the 2nd movement, and world-renowned solo artist Jim Self in the 3rd.
